Author Guidelines

Please notice that in no case the Journal of Mediterranean Knowledge can accept manuscripts that do not comply with the editorial guidelines

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Language: Manuscripts are accepted only in English. British English spelling is preferred.

Style: Provided that manuscripts are correctly written and are easily understandable, any style is admitted: impersonal form, passive form, first person (including use of first person plural to address the readers).

Abstract and Keywords: All manuscripts must be accompanied by an abstract (no more than 150 words) and three to five keywords.

Title Page: The title page must be submitted in a separate file and must include title, name of the author(s), affiliation(s), address(es) and e-mail. In case of more than one author, the corresponding author must be indicated.

LENGHT

Section Themes and perspectives (monographic section), papers of max. 12.000 words (including footnotes and references; not including abstract and keywords). 

Section Comments and debates, papers of max 8.000 words (including footnotes and references; not including abstract and keywords). 

Section Reviews and reports, papers of max 3.000 words (including footnotes and references; not including abstract and keywords). 

The maximum lenght of papers may be different in some special issue. In this case, authors will be warned in the call for papers and/or by the editors.

FONT SIZE

Title: Palatino Linotype, 14 pt., italics

Authors’ Names: Palatino Linotype, 11 pt. (Full name of authors: First name and Family name)

Affiliations: Palatino Linotype, 9 pt. (Department, University, City, Country – telephone number – e-mail)

Abstract and Keywords: Palatino Linotype, 9 pt.

Text: Palatino Linotype, 11 pt., single-spaced. 

Headings of sections: Palatino Linotype, 11 pt., italics, with sequence number.

IMAGES, CHARTS AND TABLES

Within the text, centred, at the appropriate points. Non at the end.

Each illustration, chart, image or table must have a sequence number and a title in italics, Palatino Linotype, 11 pt.

For Charts and Tables, use only the template of the ICSR Mediterranean Knowledge

REFERENCES 

APA Style must be used in both text and the references list. Download Comprehensive APA-7 References List.

The references list should be in Palatino Linotype, 9 pt., single spaced.

Archival sources: in footnote, with abbreviations after the first mention.

Example:

First mention: Telegram of the Prefect of Rome to the Ministry of Interior, 1 January 1900, in Archivio centrale dello Stato – Rome (from now ACS), Ministero dell’Interno, Direzione generale di pubblica sicurezza (from now MI, DGPS), f. 100, fs. 200.

Second mention: Report of the Prefect of Milan to the Ministry of Interior, 2 February 1901, in ACS, DGPS, f. 200, fs. 300.

Provide a list of consulted archives below the references list.

Do not use Italics for archival holdings.

Classical and Medieval texts: follow the APA Style rules, but draw up a list of consulted text and editions, below the references list.

Example:

In text: (Gregori I papae Registrum Epistolarum, IX, 228); from the second mention use abbreviations: (Reg. Epist., III, 61)

In the final list: Gregorii I papae Registrum epistolarum Libri I-VII. Ed. by P. Ewald & L. M. Hartmann. In Monumenta Germaniae Historica, Epistolae, Berlin, 1887-1899.

Page number(s): When a work is mentioned in text, report page number(s) every time is possible. In case of quotations, page number(s) is mandatory: (Rossi, 2010, pp. 30-31).

Always use the maximum number of figures for ranged numbers, e.g. 22 – 24, 105 –106, 112–123; Avoid abbreviations such as 22-4, 105-6, 112-23, etc.

In the reference list, report the page numbers of the whole article/chapter, not only the part quoted or mentioned in text.

Please notice that the references list is not a bibliography and must include only books and articles mentioned and/or quoted in text. At the same time, all mentioned books and articles must be present in the references list. Therefore, before submitting your paper check if the references list match the mentioned works.

QUOTATIONS

All quotations must be translated into English. The original version, if relevant, can be reported in a footnote. 

Short quotations: for quotations shorter than 40 words in text, enclose the words within double quotation marks: “quotation”.

Punctuation marks such as periods, commas, and semicolons should appear after the parenthetical citation. Question marks and exclamation points should be placed within the quotation marks if they are a part of the quotation; after the parenthetical citation if they are a part of the text. When paraphrasing, the citation (author and page number) must still be included. If the source is archival material, insert a footnote

Examples:

According to Nur Masalha (2007, p. 186), Maimonides was “the most illustrious example of the Arabo-Islamic-Judaic symbiosis of the late Middle Ages”;

Speaking of Maiomonides, Masalha (2007, p. 186) affirms: “He became the most illustrious example of the Arabo-Islamic-Judaic symbiosis of the late Middle Ages”.

Quotation marks: use only double quotation marks: “quotation”.Use single quotation marks only for quotations within quotations. Example: "he said: 'quotation' and…". Never use guillemets: «quotation». Do not use italics in combination with quotation marks.

Long quotations: quotations longer than 40 words must be set in a freestanding block of text, in Palatino Linotype, 9 pt., without quotation marks. Do not indent this block, but leave one empty line above and below. The parenthetical citation must follow the block; if the source is archival material, insert a footnote.

FOOTNOTES

Use footnotes to add information and to cite archival source; use APA Style, instead of footnotes, for all other quotations.

Font: Palatino Linotype, 9 pt. 

In text, the number of the note shall precede the punctuation marks:

Example: Mediterranean Knowledge¹. Mediterranean Knowledge²,

Do not use: Mediterranean Knowledge.¹Mediterranean Knowledge,²

FURTHER GUIDELINES

Dates: use only the format DD Month YYYY (with the month in words): 10 August 2001; 6 January 2016.

Numbers: In general, spell out numbers under 100; use numerals for measurements (e.g. 6 km) and ages (e.g. 9 years old). Insert a point (not a comma) for thousands (e.g. 1.000 and 20.550).

Contractions: do not use contractions, such as it’s, don’t, there’s, etc.; use only: it is, do not, there is, etc.

Highlighting words or phrases: use italics: word. Alternatively, use single quotation marks 'word'. Never use bold or underlined.

ANONYMITY FOR PEER-REVIEW

Each manuscript proposed to Journal of Mediterranean Knowledgewill be submitted to double-blind peer review process. Authors need to make sure that their manuscripts do not include any information that can disclose their identity. Key items to be observed:

• Names and affiliations under the title within the manuscript need to be removed.
• It is mandatory to speak in third person when referring to own previous works, e.g. phrases like “as we have explained elsewhere” must be replaced by “as has been explained elsewhere”. 
• Figures must not contain any affiliation or name of author.
• References to funding sources must be omitted.
• Acknowledgments must be omitted.
• Names and properties of documents should be checked to ensure anonymity.
